Discoveries between the Berry and Limousin regions

The Creuse is known not only for the beauty of its natural landscapes, but also the charm of the villages dotted across the region. Aubusson, for example, boasts an architectural heritage which bears witness to a powerful past with the Terrade neighbourhood, the clock tower, or Rue Vieille. Another famous village, Crozant, has charmed many a painter with its location: a promontory overlooking the point where the Creuse meets the Sédelle. Other little towns are worth a visit in this part of the Limousin: Ahun, Bénévent-l'Abbaye, Bourganeuf, a 12th century medieval town, Boussac, 15 km from the hotel, Crocq with its splendid chapel, Felletin, Mascot, the stone masons' village…

Between the Berry and the Limousin, the Bonne Auberge provides access to the superb towns of the Berry. Gargilesse is listed as one of the most beautiful villages of France and makes for a wonderful first stop. This little artists' village in the Creuse Valley charms visitors with is sloping roofs and romantic château. Couples can naturally visit the village of Saint-Valentin and the Venice of the Berry region, Argenton-sur-Creuse.

 

Fans of chateaux and stately homes will find plenty to visit in the Limousin. The Creuse is home to some exceptional monuments. Not far from the hotel, the impressive Boussac castle dominates the rocky valley below.One of the most famous is Villemonteix, a castle typical of the late middle ages with its central keep and rampart walk. At Peyrat la Nonière, Mazeau château is one of the rare edifices in the Limousin built during the Renaissance.You can also visit Chantemille château at Ahun, Bourganeuf château, with the famous Zizim tower, Arfeuille in Felletin, Margeleix where Lafayette spent part of his childhood, the ruins of the fort at Crocq or the Domaine de Banizette, with its 16th and 17th century buildings.
